Don't believe what they teach in school! It really goes like this:
Some new feature or technology (the widget) attracts the software team.
They discuss it in front of a manager.
The manager perceives their excitement, and melds it into his pet project.
The manager gets a budget for R%26amp;D including the widget above.
4-10 times as much money as budgeted is spent, resulting in 50-80% widget success.
The manager writes a report demonstrating 95% success to cover the spending overrun. Now the manager is on the hook to use the widget to justify everything.
Business development asks the manager an unrelated question, which results in the widget becoming "The Ultimate Widget", a ready to deploy, fully developed and documented product, which only need slight tinkering to solve any customer need.
Out of the clear blue a2 years later, the now-widely dispersed SW engineers get a call to work up a proposal. Naturally, thinking this is for the "widget" they worked on before - they work up a cost figure.
Management fine-tunes the proposal, making it more "optimistic", and reduces the estimate cost of production to 10%.
The contract is awarded.
Those engineers caught unawares, unable to hide, or not so critical in their current project that to remove them would bankrupt the entire company get pulled off their projects to work on the "The Ultimate Widget" project.
Halfway through the "The Ultimate Widget" project, it becomes necessary to work the engineers 60 hours a week. The overtime is unpaid, and this works because management lays the guilt trip on the original "Widget" engineers.
Three quarters of the way through the project, even with the unpaid OT, it become apparent that the cost will be 150% of the original engineering estimate, and 1500% of the reduced cost quoted by management.
The customer, already in the hole through money spent, agrees to a reduction from "The Ultimate Widget" to the original "Widget". More unpaid OT is required, and some of the work is farmed out to SW sweatshops that do not have the pesky quality, documentation, and CM requirements, not to mention management and company overhead. This gets the cost down to nearly the original estimate.
The widget is delivered.

1. Requirements Definition -- define what the system must do
2. System Design -- design a system to meet the requirements
3. Development -- implement the system according to the design
4. Integrate %26amp; Test -- bring all the system components together and make sure they work right
5. Deploy -- install the system where it's going to be used
6. Operate %26amp; Maintain (O%26amp;M) -- use the system and fix any problems.

PMP is definitely a good idea if you are bored of technical stuff and want to climb up the ladder faster. I think its the right time for you to make this change.

Simple, these are your test cases which you should have written up during the planning and design phase. Each test case will test a particular functionality in the end system, what is the expected output given input, testing for validity and range checking of values etc.
Another component is usually things like testing procedures, how to test, regression testing documentation, unit testing documentation, in-process and internal audits etc.
The idea is that the documents will show what tests need to be done, how they were done, the expected outputs of the tests and if those are in line with business expectations.

Where does Python stand in the mainstream development world of software applications?
Personally I feel Python is a very promising programming language, although it does not seem that it is very popular with in the main stream realm, in which Microsoft and Sun Microsystems seems to dominate. I have read a lot of articles discussing the ups and downs of Python compared to other languages like C#, java, C++, Perl, etc. But still it seems very capable of doing just about anything those languages can do. I mean there are tons od different flavors of python that are built to act just like the popular programmign languages; Python + java = Jython, Python + C/C++ = wxPython, .NET framework = IronPython and so on! what do you suppose is the reasoning on why Python hasn't become as popular as it seems it should be? I mean its been around a pretty long time, yet it still remains unoticed.

There are way more resources online for learning these applications, and there also seems to be more scope for employment (but this might differ where you are). This would be, in my opinion, the cheaper way for you to learn a skill that could get you employed. I dont regret doing ASP, but also dont see myself needing it as much in the future now.

But allas, all that stuff can be learned. Either way, to answer your question you could get a job if you learned ASP (.NET) or Java (server side) or PHP, AJAX and SQL. I would probably say it's really easy to learn how to use these tools, it's much more difficult to use them well.

Looking for software like Dreamweaver or GoLive that can create interactive, responsive websites. You might want to try Web Development. I don't know about the Phillippines but here in the US, there are plenty of courses you can take to put you on that path. Plus there is enough demand that a formal degree is not always necessary

I agree with bigrez, but I think to treat the issue at the level of the entire development shop is wrong.
Different individuals respond best to different management styles from very little interaction to being chased often for detail checks.
One of the biggest problems I see is management adopting a strategy and then applying it universally across all development staff.

The Software Engineer's goal is to build quality software that meets the requirements. (Does not exceed those requirements - doing so is an invitation for trouble.) They work within the schedule given to them and often negotiate that schedule.
The management team is concerned not only with the end product, but did it cost more than they wanted it to and did it take too long.
There are tons of books and as many different opinions about all of this. You need to understand the philosophy for your own shop because it is probably different elsewhere.

I agree with bigrez, but I think to treat the issue at the level of the entire development shop is wrong.
Different individuals respond best to different management styles from very little interaction to being chased often for detail checks.
One of the biggest problems I see is management adopting a strategy and then applying it universally across all development staff.

The Software Engineer's goal is to build quality software that meets the requirements. (Does not exceed those requirements - doing so is an invitation for trouble.) They work within the schedule given to them and often negotiate that schedule.
The management team is concerned not only with the end product, but did it cost more than they wanted it to and did it take too long.
There are tons of books and as many different opinions about all of this. You need to understand the philosophy for your own shop because it is probably different elsewhere.

I am trying to update my programming/software engineering skills to better suit the current environment. I have had two introductory classes, which were mainly focused on Java and C. I know the basics of programming in these languages, and I know what data structures are (stacks, queues, trees, etc.). However, I am having trouble with setting up the GNU development tools such as make and gdb, as well as with the concept of a makefile, since we were never taught about this. I'm also trying to understand this software engineering/lifecycle stuff, and how it can fit into the design of software.

So while the S/W engineers and managers may want to follow an agile process, they may have deliverables required by the contract that are products of a more traditional management process.
Likewise, if the software product being developed has other "external" requirements - like human safety, or security, robustness, etc. - proving that you have met those requirements may require development artifacts that are not part of the agile process. Whether or not you met those requirements in the agile process is not so much the question, as to what artifacts did your process generate that documents that the requirements were met.
My philosophy is "things are the way they are for a reason." So if agile processes want to dispense with things like documentation, design reviews, etc., you need to understand why those things were part of a traditional process, and to decide what you are losing by doing away with them.

I take it you are an undergrad. It's a fairly good start, although if in the US you might get paid a little more. Career growth and earning potential definately depend on how much you can learn and produce. You need to constantly advance your skills and be a producer. You are young, so work hard, yes put in overtime, and try to team up with Sr. developers to learn more things from them. If you show that you are eager to learn, someone will teach you. If earning more money is your objective, than ask the A players at your company how to achieve this. They will probably tell you the same thing I did. Try to take on as much work as possible, but building your credibilty within your technical circles is key. If other developers respect your work than it will be easier to move into a lead position and finally a Sr. contributor. You will earn for the 50,000 pounds. And it may not take you 10 years to get there, you could do it in half the time if you want it bad enough.

You are young, so work hard, yes put in overtime, and try to team up with Sr. developers to learn more things from them. If you show that you are eager to learn, someone will teach you. If earning more money is your objective, than ask the A players at your company how to achieve this. They will probably tell you the same thing I did. Try to take on as much work as possible, but building your credibilty within your technical circles is key. If other developers respect your work than it will be easier to move into a lead position and finally a Sr. contributor. You will earn for the 50,000 pounds. And it may not take you 10 years to get there, you could do it in half the time if you want it bad enough.

HP are pretty good, but their printer driver and software are a programmer's nightmare and a pain in the butt for network admins.

Why is HP's image editor take up 400 MB when it does less than most 5MB editors?

Good resource books techinical or trade Journals are mostly written in English. This is where a technical person would upgrade his knowlegde by reading them. So if a student is used to reading Taglish he will have difficulty understanding them as well as improving himself. You should prepare world class students and that will need student who have high understandding of English language. We are now in living in Global world ,we can find jobs wherever we want to work as long as we are qulaified and can speak prper English.
The problem of Philippines was due to the Stupid Politicians who changed the medium of intructions from English to Pilipino in the 70's. Now Flipinos are sufferring due to the lack of fluent English speakers .The demand in BPOs and Call Center is very high and yet we have a high unemployment rate because the graduates can' not speak English well. BPOs and Call centers don't even require graduates to join them.Got that?
I say stupid politicians because these leaders and legislators are the ones who made the Philipines languish in poverty. One of them was the changing of the medium of instructions.
You can find Filipinos with good English skills who graduated in the early ' 70s and below. Most of them coming from public schools.
Don't fall on the trap of some lazy groups that wanted Taglish ,it will not do any good for the Philippines and its citizens.

There is no easy answer to this question. But, as I used to own a small software development company, I can offer the following advice.
1) Specialize. Seven or eight years ago, you could be a general firm, but now, clients can find a firm that specializes in exactly the type of software development they need. Pick an area, either a technology or a business process (or industry), and position yourselves as the definitive experts.
2) Define your clients. After you decide on a specialty, you need to determine who exactly buys that specialty at your clients. Again, be as specific as possible. It's not always the CIO - it might be a particular VP of Development, or it might be the business owner, i.e. finance or marketing.
3) Define your value proposition. What value does your firm provide in that specialty?
4) Define your messaging. Once you have your value proposition, conduct a market research survey to define the best messages for your clients. Put together a list of 300 people to call, develop a short survey (5 to 7 minutes), and start making calls. Based on my experience, you should get between 20 and 25 valid responses. Refine your messaging based on what you heard. This is the SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT step you can take.
5) During the survey process, you might actually find interested potential clients, but do not make the survey about sales.
6) Identify real clients and enter into the sales process. The process is not difficult - it is a combination of marketing materials (letters, postcards, whitepapers, etc.) and phone calls. Make sure to treat your potential clients as peers - you are the expert, and you are calling to help them solve a business problem. Make sure to have good references if possible.
7) Fill the sales channel. Direct sales is a function of the number of calls you make. Make a call, send materials, follow up, push for a meeting, and always be driving towards a proposal. Identify short, small projects that you might take as a loss (or break even) to get in the door. Once you are there, you can source for more work.
8) Follow up and details are critically important. You would be amazed about how many companies do not follow this simple rule. Be the service provider that is always on the ball, and you will set yourself apart.
This is, of course, an over simplified explanation. But perhaps it will be a good starting point.

1) Specialize. Seven or eight years ago, you could be a general firm, but now, clients can find a firm that specializes in exactly the type of software development they need. Pick an area, either a technology or a business process (or industry), and position yourselves as the definitive experts.
2) Define your clients. After you decide on a specialty, you need to determine who exactly buys that specialty at your clients. Again, be as specific as possible. It's not always the CIO - it might be a particular VP of Development, or it might be the business owner, i.e. finance or marketing.
3) Define your value proposition. What value does your firm provide in that specialty?
4) Define your messaging. Once you have your value proposition, conduct a market research survey to define the best messages for your clients. Put together a list of 300 people to call, develop a short survey (5 to 7 minutes), and start making calls. Based on my experience, you should get between 20 and 25 valid responses. Refine your messaging based on what you heard. This is the SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT step you can take.
5) During the survey process, you might actually find interested potential clients, but do not make the survey about sales.
6) Identify real clients and enter into the sales process. The process is not difficult - it is a combination of marketing materials (letters, postcards, whitepapers, etc.) and phone calls. Make sure to treat your potential clients as peers - you are the expert, and you are calling to help them solve a business problem. Make sure to have good references if possible.
7) Fill the sales channel. Direct sales is a function of the number of calls you make. Make a call, send materials, follow up, push for a meeting, and always be driving towards a proposal. Identify short, small projects that you might take as a loss (or break even) to get in the door. Once you are there, you can source for more work.
8) Follow up and details are critically important. You would be amazed about how many companies do not follow this simple rule. Be the service provider that is always on the ball, and you will set yourself apart.
This is, of course, an over simplified explanation. But perhaps it will be a good starting point.
