It is possible that in the company you work for (you didn't mention who) your job will not change. If that is the case, why not look for the job that will make you happy? It would be a good question to ask the management of your present company, maybe all they require for advancement is more schooling!
Reply:It IS possible, but you need to make your desires known to the management. In some companies developers may first be put into testing roles so that (a) they can grow to understand how important testing is and (b) learn what it's like to be a user. Sometimes there might be a temporary tester shortage and it's not unreasonable that developers help out. What happens to you really depends on the culture of your organisation and, of course, on your own abilities, attitude and drive. (I am assuming, of course, that you DO have competent development skills).

In summary, raise the subject of moving to development with your managers and ask for a timeframe. If they're unwilling to discuss it at all or if they're reluctant to describe how (or when) you can make the move, then it's probably a good idea to make a move out of there.
